De eerste reviews van de Apple Watch staan online. De internationale pers is al even met het slimme horloge aan de haal gegaan. Er heerst een overduidelijke consensus over het apparaat - eentje waar de pr-machine van Apple wellicht van hapert.

Apple heeft in de afgelopen weken verschillende journalisten en redacteuren van internationale websites de kans gegeven aan de haal te gaan met de Apple Watch, onder andere tijdens speciale evenement. Ook heeft Apple, voordat het slimme horloge te pre-orderen is, verschillende leden van de pers al voorzien van een Apple Watch, zodat die allemaal netjes een artikel over het Apple-horloge online zetten wanneer het embargo verlopen is. Uiteraard net voordat er besteld kan worden - ook al kan de consensus Apple meer slecht dan goed doen.

De website Macrumors heeft een aantal interessante quotes van een aantal verschillende publicaties verzameld die we je niet willen onthouden. Mocht je voornemens zijn zelf een Apple Watch te bestellen op 10 april, lees je dan in elk geval goed in voordat je dat doet. Het is geen goedkoop apparaat en je moet wel zeker van je keuze zijn.

Joshua Topolsky, Bloomberg:

"The watch is not life-changing. It is, however, excellent. Apple will sell millions of these devices, and many people will love and obsess over them. It is a wonderful component of a big ecosystem that the company has carefully built over many years. It is more seamless and simple than any of its counterparts in the marketplace. It is, without question, the best smartwatch in the world."

Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times:
"It was only on Day 4 that I began appreciating the ways in which the elegant $650 computer on my wrist was more than just another screen. But that ambition robs it of focus: it can do tiny bits of everything, instead of a few things extraordinarily well. One day this past week, I woke up at 5:15 am, exercised for an hour using the Watch, ran Maps during my commute, made phones calls and received notifications throughout the whole day, and by 11:00 pm the Watch was just hitting its Power Reserve point."

"The Apple Watch is light-years better than any of the feeble, clunky efforts that have come before it. The screen is nicer, the software is refined and bug-free, the body is real jewelry. First-time technologies await at every turn: Magnetic bands, push-to-release straps, wrist-to-wrist drawings or Morse codes, force pressing, credit-card payments from the wrist. And the symbiosis with the iPhone is graceful, out of your way, and intelligent.

But the true answer to that question is this: You don’t need one. Nobody needs a smartwatch. After all, it’s something else to buy, care for, charge every night. It’s another cable to pack and track. Your phone already serves most of its purposes. With the battery-life situation as it is, technology is just barely in place to make such a device usable at all."


Vanaf aanstaande vrijdag is het zover: dan kun je de Apple Watch in een aantal landen alvast vooruit bestellen (pre-orderen). Apple heeft bekendgemaakt dat het slimme horloge vanaf 10 april precies om 00:01 uur Pacific Time in Noord-Amerika te bestellen is. Wanneer je dat omrekent naar de tijdens in de Europese landen waar je de Apple Watch wel kunt bestellen, aangezien dat in Nederland dan nog niet kan, komen we uit op 09:01 uur op vrijdagochtend 10 april in Duitsland en Frankrijk (en 08:01 in Engeland).
